Happy Friday! We are so close to finishing up the school year that I can already picture myself sleeping in and lounging around the house all day. Ha! I wish. That’s what my teenagers will be doing. Instead, I’ll be at work all day… enjoying all the free air conditioning I can handle.
Actually, I do love the summer break. No tests, no homework, no projects. I thought that last physics project was going to do us in. Have you heard of the “egg drop”? For extra credit, kids make a contraption to hold an egg. This contraption is made out of no more than 24 straws and string – nothing else. Then they drop the egg contraption off the second floor of the science building. If the egg doesn’t break, they get .5% extra credit. If the egg survives the second floor drop, then they drop it from the roof of the building… for an extra .25%. So for a whopping total of .75% extra credit, your kid (and you) will spend hours trying to make something out of straws and string to hold an egg. Fortunately, Maddie did much of the project herself and it survived the first drop from the second floor. Next week they’ll be dropping them off the roof.
Speaking of physics, have you ever watched a bird fly? Like really watched them? If you pay attention, you can see the shifts in their wings and their bodies as they fly higher and lower, watching them pick up speed and really soar. Birds are truly incredible to watch.
The Bird Ballad Suite is full of amazing little birdies and bird motifs. These little guys are so full of color – just like the real thing. We have some pretty great bird stamps in the set, but my birdie below is hand cut from the pattern paper and he’s sitting on the little branch with the flowers. The colors in the pattern paper all work so well together. Here’s a close-up of that birdie and the flower. The flower is hand cut from the pattern paper as well.
The May Paper Pumpkin Kit, Hugs From Shelli, was designed to coordinate with the Bird Ballad Suite. I think I’m going to have to get the leftover bits from my Kit and see how well they match up. Stay tuned. I’ll try to have a combined project for you next week.
