So I honestly had planned to get a bunch of birthday cards made this weekend. Guess how many I made?
One.
Yep, just one. Sometimes, that’s just the way it works out. Time, or better said the lack of time, plays a big part in this. And it’s crazy because school hasn’t started and soccer season hasn’t kicked into high gear yet. Where did this weekend go?
I managed to get a couple things made this weekend, but my favorite is the one birthday card that I made. Very simple, and still looks very pretty. The giant rose from the Graceful Garden stamp set is perfect for watercoloring. The large petals give you lots of room to work with the ink colors. I started by watercoloring Sweet Sugarplum on the petals. Then I layered in some Berry Burst on top to add a little shading and depth. I find I have the best success with watercoloring when I start with less ink on my aqua painter. Let dry a little bit, then go back in and add a little more color where needed.
The leaves and stem are all done in Old Olive. I started with a light wash of color first, and then added in a little more for shading and depth. When using your aqua painter, remember to avoid saturating your paper with water if you are using cardstock. Cardstock will start to pill and separate with too much water. The reverse is true when watercoloring on watercolor paper. The watercolor paper is designed to hold more water.
And let’s talk about that pattern paper! Oh my goodness, this 6×6″ Petal Garden paper stack is quickly turning into a favorite. If you aren’t fond of the big bold flowers on one side, the reverse sides look like these with beautiful subtle patterns. These pattern sheets are cut to 3.75″x5″, which means you can get only one out of each 6×6″ sheet. Believe me, I know the struggle of cutting a sheet of paper so you purposefully can’t get two out of the same sheet. Sometimes it’s worth it though. Any smaller than this size, and the rose would have been out of proportion.
